Karan also asks Saif what he would want to know from Sara’s prospective boyfriend. “Political views, drugs,” Saif replies, but Karan interrupts him, “Money would be a nice question to ask. I would ask that.” Saif then promptly retorts, “Got cash? Take her.”

Book review: The Indian Empire At War

The book under review is among the more recent additions to this slim corpus on the Indian effort in the Great War and is both comprehensive and distinctive.

World War I was a long and brutal military confrontation between the major powers of the early 20th century, fought across the trenches of Europe and in large swathes of Asia and Africa, resulting in the death of millions of hapless soldiers who became unwitting pawns in the great global “game”.

The four-year-long war that led to as many as 20 million dead and an equal number wounded ended on November 11, 1918, when an armistice was signed and a defeated Germany was compelled to accept closure. Over the last decade, there has been a spurt of interest among historians about the Great War; and the Indian contribution which remained relatively obscured has been brought back into focus. Undivided India, then a colony of the British Empire, contributed 1.5 million soldiers and non-combatants to this war and they served with distinction in all the major theatres. It is estimated that as many as 74,000 of them died in that war.

The book under review is among the more recent additions to this slim corpus on the Indian effort in the Great War and is both comprehensive and distinctive. As author George Morton-Jack points out, “This book is the first single narrative of it on all fronts, a global epic not only of the Indians’ part in the Allied victory over the Central Powers, but also of soldiers’ personal discoveries on their four-year odyssey.”

Neatly divided into six major chapters, the book provides the political context, beginning with the Delhi Durbar of 1911, in a lucid introductory chapter and the manner in which Herbert Asquith, then “Britain’s brandy-loving Prime Minister”, declared in Parliament on August 6, 1914: “We are unsheathing our sword in a just cause.”

But when they were swiftly recruited from different parts of British India to be shipped (like lambs to the slaughter) to distant lands in Europe - for many of these young men it was their first foray outside of their villages and small townships -- they understood little of the complex politics about the War, intrigued about the “Jermuns” and, as Morton-Jack adds: “...the Indian ranks stoically suffered the Western Front’s rain and mud, cruelly catapulted by the fates into a war far from home that was never their own yet winning their fair share of VCs.” (As a contemporary aside, US President Donald Trump chose to avoid the rain and skip the centenary ceremony outside Paris on November 11, 2018.)

The VC (Victoria Cross) was awarded for the highest acts of gallantry in “the presence of the enemy” and this book empathetically records the incredible valour of the Indian “fauji” in the Great War. As the author recounts, in 1927, the Secretary of State at London’s India Office “favourably compared the Indian infantry in France to the 300 Spartans at Thermopylae, ‘those whose valour was immortal’“.

However, this book is not only about the battlefield exploits of the Indian soldier but a multi-layered, rigorously researched and empathetically interpreted account of the Indian contribution to the Great War. The author’s objective of shining “a more filtered light on the Indian soldiers” is luminously met.

Pictures and maps embellish the value of this book and one of the more moving is that of an Indian cavalryman sharing his food with a local woman near Baghdad. Another is of a German officer standing over the body of a dead Indian soldier -- posing for the “trophy” photograph.

Morton-Jack, to his credit, does not shy away from recording the cruel face of the colonial ruler and details the coercive methods used to recruit the reluctant tribal Indian. He notes that despite all the talk in London of “fighting the world war in defence of freedom”, the unfortunate experience of the Kuki (Assam) and Marri (Baluchistan) tribesmen -- where hundreds were killed by British and Indian officers for resisting recruitment -- “revealed that as colonial rulers the British had not changed their ugliest spots of colonial control from pre-1914 days”.

This is a splendid book and the author is to be commended for the manner in which he leavens the diligence of the researcher with the objectivity of the historian.

 पंजाब के अमृतसर के नजदीक स्थित राजासांसी गांव में धमाका होने की खबर है। इस धमाके में 3 लोगों की मौत हो गई है, वहीं 10 लोगों के घायल होने की खबर है। यह धमाका इलाके के निरंकारी भवन में हुआ। बताया जा रहा है कि बाइक पर सवार दो संदिग्धों ने निरंकारी भवन में बम फेंके। पुलिस और प्रशासनिक अधिकारी मौके पर पहुंचकर मामले की जांच में जुटे हैं। दरअसल रविवार के दिन निरंकारी भवन में धार्मिक समागम का कार्यक्रम होता है, जिसके चलते यहां रविवार को काफी भीड़ होती है। जिस जगह यह धमाका हुआ, वह अमृतसर का बाहरी ग्रामीण इलाका है, जहां सीसीटीवी कैमरे नहीं है, जिसके चलते संदिग्धों की पहचान अभी तक नहीं हो पायी है।

चश्मदीदों का कहना है कि संदिग्धों ने अपना मुंह ढका हुआ था। बम धमाके के बाद निरंकारी भवन में भगदड़ मच गई, जिसमें भी कई लोग घायल हुए हैं। घायलों को नजदीकी अस्पताल में भर्ती कराया गया है। उल्लेखनीय है कि पंजाब बीते कुछ दिनों से हाईअलर्ट पर चल रहा था, साथ ही खूफिया एजेंसियों ने भीड़-भाड़ वाले इलाकों और धार्मिक स्थलों पर हमले की सूचना देते हुए पुलिस प्रशासन को अलर्ट किया था। लेकिन इसके बावजूद यह धमाका राज्य की सुरक्षा व्यवस्था पर गंभीर सवाल खड़ा कर रहा है। बता दें कि हाल ही में जम्मू कश्मीर के खूंखार आतंकी जाकिर मूसा के पंजाब में देखे जाने की खबर आयी थी। जिसके बाद पुलिस जगह जगह चेकिंग और छापेमारी कर रही थी। अमृतसर में बम धमाके के बाद दिल्ली को हाई अलर्ट कर दिया गया है।

अनन्त कुमार (22 जुलाई 1959 - 12 नवंबर 2018) एक भारतीय राजनेता थे। वे भारतीय जनता पार्टी से सम्बन्धित थे और मोदी मन्त्रिमण्डल में मन्त्री थे। वे २००९ में हुए आमचुनाव में कर्नाटक के बैंगलुरू दक्षिण चुनाव क्षेत्र से १५ वीं लोकसभा के लिए सदस्य निर्वाचित हुए थे।^[1]

अनन्त कुमार 1996 से बेंगलुरु दक्षिण लोकसभा सीट से सांसद थे। मोदी सरकार में उन्हें रसायन और उर्वरक मंत्रालय और संसदीय मामलों का मंत्री पद मिला। वह शुरुआत में राष्ट्रीय स्वयंसेवक संघ से जुड़े और छात्र राजनति से होते हुए भाजपा में आए थे।

कुछ समय से वे कैन्सर से पीड़ित थे।१२ नवम्बर २०१८ को रात २ बजे अचानक उनकी स्थिति बिगड़ी और उन्हें बचाया नहीं जा सका।

मुंबई, 15 नवंबर (भाषा) सार्वजनिक क्षेत्र के बैंकों की दबाव वाली संपत्तियों के तेजी से निपटान के लिए सुनील मेहता की अगुवाई में गठित बैंकरों की समिति ने बड़े डूबे कर्ज के लिए संपत्ति प्रबंधन कंपनी (एएमसी) का गठन किया है। समिति के चेयरमैन सुनील मेहता ने बृहस्पतिवार को यह जानकारी देते हुए कहा कि इस कंपनी का नाम सशक्त इंडिया एसेट मैनेजमेंट है। उन्होंने यह भी बताया कि समिति अब वैकल्पिक निवेश कोष (एआईएफ) के लिए संभावित निवेशकों की पहचान कर रही है। यह एएमसी का वित्तपोषण करेगा। सरकार ने जुलाई में बैंकिंग क्षेत्र के दबाव से निपटने को प्रोजेक्ट सशक्त के तहत पांच स्तरीय रणनीति का प्रस्ताव किया था। इसी के तहत पंजाब नेशनल बैंक के गैर कार्यकारी चेयरमैन मेहता की अगुवाई में समिति गठित की गई थी। समिति को 500 करोड़ रुपये से अधिक की गैर निष्पादित आस्तियों (एनपीए) के निपटान को एएमसी और एआईएफ का गठन करना था। मेहता ने यहां सीआईआई-सीएफओ के सम्मेलन के मौके पर अलग से बातचीत में कहा कि एएमसी बेहतर तरीके से आगे बढ़ रही है। इसे सशक्त इंडिया एसेट मैनेजमेंट का नाम दिया गया है।

Gold is back. That's a worrying sign

New York (CNN Business)Gold has been a dud of an investment for much of the year, but it has started to regain some of its luster.

The price of gold is up 3.5% since the start of October. During the same period, the S&P 500 has fallen 6.5%.

Gold tends to do hold up well in times of turmoil and it's a particularly compelling investment when people are worried about inflation -- like they are now. Wages grew at their fastest clip since 2009, according to October's jobs report.

Gold is particularly attractive to central banks looking for safe, liquid assets. Central bank purchases of gold increased by 22% during the third quarter . That's the fastest pace since the fourth quarter of 2015, according to Natalie Dempster, managing director for central banks and public policy at the World Gold Council.

During the past couple of years, most gold purchases had been made by Russia, Turkey and Kazakhstan. They are still major gold buyers, and countries like India, Poland and Hungary, have aggressively ramped up purchases lately, Dempster noted. But central bank purchases are drawing attention.

More central banks are flocking to gold

"The big story at the moment for gold is the central banks," Dempster told CNN Business. "The pace of buying has really increased and it's broadened."

Investors have taken notice. Shares of Newmont Mining (NEM), a gold mining stock in the S&P 500, are up nearly 7% since the start of October.

And according to EPFR Global, a fund that tracks money going in and out of mutual funds, commodities-based mutual funds attracted more investments last week mainly because of increased demand for gold funds.

Gold glittering even as other commodities tank

Gold has performed well even as more economically sensitive commodities have not. Oil and copper prices both fell in October for example.

Dempster expects the trend of rising gold prices to continue as American investors continue to show more interest, particularly as the Federal Reserve is expected to keep hiking rates to combat inflation.

That could make the US dollar and gold even more attractive as places to hide in uncertain times.

In fact, the World Gold Council reported that demand for gold bars and coins in the United States surged 74% in the third quarter.

"Stock market volatility has pushed more people to gold. Any further wobbles on Wall Street could lead to more demand for gold going forward," she said.

Still, gold has a long way to go before it gets back to its highs of earlier this year -- the last time investors were freaking out about inflation. Gold was trading above $1,350 an ounce in February. It's now trading at around $1,230.

NEW YORK — After a yearlong search for a second home, Amazon is now reportedly looking to build offices in two cities instead of one, a surprise move that could still have a major impact on the communities it ultimately selects. One of the areas the online retail giant is considering is New York’s Long Island City, according to a source familiar with the talks. In addition to Long Island City, The New York Times reports Amazon is also finalizing a deal to locate to the Crystal City section of Arlington, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C. स्टैच्यू ऑफ यूनिटी भारत के प्रथम उप प्रधानमन्त्री तथा प्रथम गृहमन्त्री वल्लभभाई पटेल को समर्पित एक स्मारक है,^[2] जो भारतीय राज्य गुजरात में स्थित है।^[3] गुजरात के तत्कालीन मुख्यमन्त्री नरेन्द्र मोदी ने 31 अक्टूबर 2013 को सरदार पटेल के जन्मदिवस के मौके पर इस विशालकाय मूर्ति के निर्माण का शिलान्यास किया था। यह स्मारक सरदार सरोवर बांध से 3.2 किमी की दूरी पर साधू बेट नामक स्थान पर है जो कि नर्मदा नदी पर एक टापू है। यह स्थान भारतीय राज्य गुजरात के भरुच के निकट नर्मदा जिले में स्थित है।^[4]

यह विश्व की सबसे ऊँची मूर्ति है, जिसकी लम्बाई 182 मीटर (597 फीट) है।^[5] इसके बाद विश्व की दुसरी सबसे ऊँची मूर्ति चीन में स्प्रिंग टैम्पल बुद्ध है, जिसकी आधार के साथ कुल ऊंचाई 208 मीटर (682 फीट) हैं।^[6]

प्रारम्भ में इस परियोजना की कुल लागत भारत सरकार द्वारा लगभग 3,001 करोड़ (US$438.15 मिलियन) रखी गयी थी।^[7] बाद लार्सन एंड टूब्रो ने अक्टूबर 2014 में सबसे कम 2,989 करोड़ (US$436.39 मिलियन) की बोली लगाई जिसमे आकृति, निर्माण तथा रखरखाव शामिल था। निर्माण कार्य का प्रारम्भ 31 अक्टूबर 2013 को प्रारम्भ हुआ।^[8][9] मूर्ति का निर्माण कार्य मध्य अक्टूबर 2018 में समाप्त हो गया।^[10] इसका उद्घाटन भारत के प्रधानमंत्री नरेन्द्र मोदी द्वारा 31 अक्टूबर 2018 को सरदार पटेल के जन्मदिवस के मौके पर किया गया।^[11]

अभियान[संपादित करें]

लौह पुरुष सरदार पटेल, जिनकी स्मृति में यह विशाल स्मारक लोहे से ही बनाया जायेगा।

गुजरात सरकार द्वारा 7 अक्टूबर 2010 को इस परियोजना की घोषणा की गयी थी।^[12] इस मूर्ति को बनाने के लिये लोहा पूरे भारत के गाँव में रहने वाले किसानों से खेती के काम में आने वाले पुराने और बेकार हो चुके औजारों का संग्रह करके जुटाया गया।^[13] सरदार वल्लभभाई पटेल राष्ट्रीय एकता ट्रस्ट ने इस कार्य हेतु पूरे भारतवर्ष में 36 कार्यालय खोले,^[13] जिससे लगभग 5 लाख किसानों से लोहा जुटाने का लक्ष्य रखा गया।^[14] इस अभियान का नाम "स्टैच्यू ऑफ यूनिटी अभियान" दिया गया।^[15][16] 3 माह लम्बे इस अभियान में लगभग 6 लाख ग्रामीणों ने मूर्ति स्थापना हेतु लोहा दान किया।^[16] इस दौरान लगभग 5,000 मीट्रिक टन लोहे का संग्रह किया गया।^[17] हालाँकि शुरुआत में यह घोषणा की गयी थी कि संग्रहित किया गया लोहे का उपयोग मुख्य प्रतिमा में किया जायेगा, मगर बाद में यह लोहा प्रतिमा में उपयोग नहीं हो सका और इसे परियोजना से जुड़े अन्य निर्माणों में प्रयोग किया गया।^[18]

मूर्ति निर्माण के अभियान से "सुराज" प्रार्थना-पत्र बना जिसमे जनता बेहतर शासन पर अपनी राय लिख सकती थी। सुराज प्रार्थना पत्र पर 2 करोड़ लोगों ने अपने हस्ताक्षर किये, जो कि विश्व का सबसे बड़ा प्रार्थना-पत्र बन गया जिसपर हस्ताक्षर हुए हों।^[15] इसके अतरिक्त 15 दिसम्बर 2013 को एक "रन फॉर यूनिटी" नामक मैराथन का भी पूरे भारतवर्ष में आयोजन हुआ।^[19] इस मैराथन में भी बड़ी संख्या में लोगों ने भाग लिया।^{[15][20][21][22]}

परियोजना[संपादित करें]

जनवरी 2018 में निर्माणाधीन स्टैच्यू ऑफ यूनिटी

भारत के प्रथम उप प्रधानमंत्री सरदार वल्लभभाई पटेल को समर्पित यह स्मारक नर्मदा बांध की दिशा में, उससे 3.2 किमी दूर साधू बेट नामक नदी द्वीप पर बनाया गया है। आधार सहित इस मूर्ति की कुल ऊँचाई 240 मीटर है जिसमे 58 मीटर का आधार तथा 182 मीटर की मूर्ति है। यह मूर्ति इस्पात साँचे, प्रबलित कंक्रीट तथा कांस्य लेपन से युक्त है।^[1] इस स्मारक की विशेषताएँ निम्नलिखित हैं:

• मूर्ति पर कांस्य लेपन
• स्मारक तक पहुँचने के लिये लिफ्ट
• मूर्ति का त्रि-स्तरीय आधार, जिसमे प्रदर्शनी फ्लोर, छज्जा और छत शामिल हैं। छत पर स्मारक उपवन, विशाल संग्रहालय तथा प्रदर्शनी हॉल है जिसमे सरदार पटेल की जीवन तथा योगदानों को दर्शाया गया है।
• एक नदी से 500 फिट ऊँचा आब्जर्वर डेक का भी निर्माण किया गया है जिसमे एक ही समय में दो सौ लोग मूर्ति का निरिक्षण कर सकते हैं।
• नाव के द्वारा केवल 5 मिनट में मूर्ति तक पहुँचा जा सकेगा।
• एक आधुनिक पब्लिक प्लाज़ा भी बनाया गया है, जिससे नर्मदा नदी व मूर्ति देखी जा सकती है। इसमें खान-पान स्टॉल, उपहार की दुकानें, रिटेल और अन्य सुविधाएँ शामिल हैं, जिससे पर्यटकों को अच्छा अनुभव होगा।^[5]

वित्तीय सहायता[संपादित करें]

स्मारक सार्वजनिक-निजी साझेदारी के माध्यम से बना है, जिसमे अधिकांश भाग गुजरात सरकार का है। गुजरात सरकार ने 2012-13 बजट में इस हेतु ₹100 करोड़ तथा 2014-15 में ₹500 करोड़ आवंटित किये थे।^[23] 2014-15 भारतीय संघ के बजट में इस मूर्ति के निर्माण हेतु ₹2 अरब आवंटित किये गये।^[24][25][26]

निर्माण[संपादित करें]

इस मूर्ति के निर्माण हेतु टर्नर कंस्ट्रक्शन (बुर्ज खलीफा^[27] का परियोजना प्रबंधक) की सहायता ली जा रही है। इसे पूर्ण होने में लगभग 4 वर्ष का समय लगा। परियोजना की कुल लागत 2,063 करोड़ (US$301.2 मिलियन) है।^[28] प्रथम चरण के लिये अक्टूबर 2013 को बोली के लिये आमंत्रित किया गया और नवम्बर 2018 तक चला।^[29]

तत्कालीन गुजरात के मुख्यमंत्री नरेन्द्र मोदी (अब भारत के प्रधानमंत्री) ने 31 अक्टूबर 2013 को सरदार वल्लभभाई पटेल के 138वें जन्मदिवस के अवसर पर इस स्मारक का शिलान्यास किया।^[12][30] इसके पश्चात मोदी ने लालकृष्ण आडवाणी के साथ यह घोषणा की कि यह मूर्ति निर्माण के बाद दुनिया की सबसे लम्बी मूर्ति होगी।^[12][31][32]

भारतीय विनिर्माण कंपनी लार्सन एंड टूब्रो ने 27 अक्टूबर 2014 को सबसे कम 2,989 करोड़ (US$436.39 मिलियन) की बोली लगाकर आकृति, निर्माण तथा रखरखाव की जिम्मेदारी ली।^[8][9] मूर्ति का निर्माण मध्य-अक्टूबर 2018 तक समाप्त हो गया।^[33] प्रधानमंत्री नरेन्द्र मोदी 31 अक्टूबर 2018 को इस मूर्ति का उद्घाटन किया।^[11]

सम्बद्ध मुद्दे[संपादित करें]

स्थानीय लोगों ने इस मूर्ति हेतु पर्यटन विनिर्माण विकास हेतु भूमि अधिग्रहण का विरोध किया। उन्होंने यह दावा किया कि साधु बेट का वास्तविक नाम वरट बावा टेकरी है और यह धार्मिक महत्व का स्थान है, जो एक स्थानीय देवी के नाम पर पड़ा है।^[30]

पर्यावरणविदों ने केन्द्र सरकार को लिखे पत्र में कहा कि इस परियोजना का प्रारम्भ बिना पर्यावरण मंत्रालय की स्वीकृति के प्रारम्भ हो गया है।^[34]

केवाडिया, कोठी, वघाडिया, लिम्बडी, नवगाम तथा गोरा ग्राम के ग्रामीणों ने मूर्ति निर्माण का विरोध किया। उनकी माँग थी कि इससे पूर्व बाँध एवं गरुड़ेश्वर तालुका के गठन के लिये अधिग्रहीत की गयी 927 एकड़ भूमि के स्वामित्व का अधिकार उन्हें वापस दिलाया जाय। उन्होंने केवाडिया क्षेत्र विकास प्राधिकरण (अंग्रेज़ी: KADA, काडा) के गठन के अलावा गरुड़ेश्वर मेड़ व पक्की सड़क परियोजना के निर्माण का भी विरोध किया है। गुजरात सरकार ने उनकी मांगों को स्वीकार कर लिया।^[35]

जब 2014-15 के केन्द्रीय बजट में इस मूर्ति हेतु 2 अरब रुपये आवंटित किये गये तो कुछ लोगों तथा विपक्षी राजनैतिक दलों ने इतने अधिक खर्चे की निन्दा की तथा महिला सुरक्षा, शिक्षा, कृषि योजनाओं पर अधिक धन खर्च करने की सलाह दी।^{[36][37][38][39]} एलएंडटी ने मूर्ति पर कांस्य लेपन हेतु टीक्यू आर्ट फाउंडरी के साथ करार किया, जो कि मूल रूप से नानचांग, चीन स्थित जियांगशी टॉनिक कंपनी की सहायक है। इस कदम का गुजरात विधानसभा का मुख्य विपक्षी दल भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस ने विरोध किया।^[40]
